CANCELLATION OF 2009 ETON ROWING COURSES

Below is a copy of the statement that was issued by the Bursar of Eton College, Mr Andrew Wynn, on Friday 5th June regarding this year's Eton Rowing Courses

“I am writing to say that Eton has decided with much regret to cancel its residential summer courses this year. The reason for cancellation is the spread of swine flu that is currently apparent in this country as a whole, especially in schools. Eton itself recently had to close for a week when a pupil was diagnosed with swine flu. The very demanding experience of dealing with the outbreak has led us reluctantly to the conclusion that in these exceptional circumstances it would be ill-advised to bring people together for summer courses in a residential setting.

The College is very aware of the benefit that its courses provide to hundreds of young people in a normal year, and is acutely conscious of the personal disappointment that is likely to be felt because of this year’s cancellation. We are extremely sorry. It was a difficult and unwelcome decision to have to take. We shall work hard on arranging a good programme of courses next year.”

We wish to extend our deepest sympathies to all of the 2009 ERC students for any disappointment caused by this decision. Full refunds will of course be issued, and all students who had places for 2009 will receive preferential treatment in the applications process for 2010, should they wish to reapply. More details of this will be published on the website later in the year.
